Nystrom United Revitalization Effort (NURVE)
Imagine a safe, diverse and thriving community where kids walk to quality schools, people of all ages enjoy parks, community facilities and winding trails, and quality housing – regardless of income – meet the needs of all families.
This vision is becoming a reality thanks to the Nystrom United Revitalization Effort (NURVE). With a focus on improving the quality of life for youth and families, NURVE is a collaborative effort between the Richmond Children’s Foundation and various city, county and community entities.
Recognizing the importance of community building and engagement, the Richmond Children’s Foundation is focusing its efforts on a Community Listening Campaign.
Creating community dialogue, beginning with parents ofchildren enrolled in Richmond College Preparatory Pre-school and Charter Elementary School, the work will center on areas of common interest – first and foremost the healthy development of children – making a substantial contribution to building a neighborhood filled with health and vibrancy, ensuring access to jobs, healthcare and needed services.
Another focus of NURVE is to ensure the success of capital projects, including the rebuilding of Nystrom Elementary School, the Maritime Childdevelopment Center, and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, as well as Nystrom Village, entailing the redevelopment of four blocks of public housing. The Richmond Children’s Foundation has been a key leader in planning and securing financial support for these projects.
The Richmond Children’s Foundation uses five core community-building values in the NURVE collaborative:
- Create a sense of belonging: Involve parents and the community at large. Encourage community interaction. Design programs and work in collaboration with the City, School District and the County to ensure public programs are available and accessible.
- Respect the place: Identify and build upon the neighborhood’s special qualities. Embrace the qualities of the sense of history and culture that exist in Nystrom.
- Create a safe and friendly environment: Make a walk able community. Increase transportation choices.
- Encourage worthy development: Make development recognize its community obligations. Provide appropriate economic opportunities. Create great places to live.
- Retain a sense of community. Provide families with all of the opportunities necessary to build full, enriching lives. Help parents build a network of support with their friends, families and neighbors.

Richmond Farm 2 Table
Our urban neighborhoods are facing a public health crisis that includes childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. According to the Contra Costa County Health Services Department, African Americans and Latinos living in Richmond are most at risk for obesity as measured by the body mass index and 1 out of every 4 children is currently overweight or obese putting them at high risk of diabetes and other chronic disease. Our community is ranked among the top 10 communities in California at highest risk of obesity and diabetes because of ourRetail Food Enironment Index that compares fastfood andconvenience markets to grocery stores that carry a selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Richmond Farm 2 Table Program is a model for bringing local produce to urban neighborhoods. Here is how it works. Farmers and neighborhoods work together to produce and distribute boxes of fresh produce. The Richmond Children’s Foundation, in partnership with EcoVillage Farm Learning Center, the Brentwood Agricultural Land Trust, the Office of County Supervisor John Gioia, Contra Costa Health Services Community Wellness and Prevention Program and the City of Richmond, is establishing this program for families in urban Richmond and the surrounding neighborhoods. The program will provide boxes of fresh, seasonal, local produce twice each month. The boxes will contain recipe cards as well as a community newsletter. Boxes are delivered to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center for pick up by participants.
Corporations, local businesses and other employers can participate in this project in many ways.
Have your employees enroll.
Post the Richmond Farm 2 Table Program flyers in your employee break room or other prominent area and distribute the Program brochures to all employees. The cost is $50.00 per month per employee participant and will provide the employee with a produce box twice each month, and support the subsidy of one low income family. If 10 or more employees join the Program, we will deliver the boxes to your company.
Donate to support local families.
A gift of $10 per month or $120.00 per year will support one family in Richmond for an entire year. You can sponsor as many families as you would like. Every dollar goes toward purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables for local families.
If you already have a similar program….
Consider adding a few dollars every month to each employee produce box and contributing those extra dollars to support local families.

NURVE Youth Advisory Council
The NURVE Youth Advisory Council represents the youth voice in the Santa Fe and Coronado neighborhoods. They are young leaders, ages 16 - 21, who live in and are affected by what happens in these neighborhoods. The Council grew out of work undertaken by students at Kennedy High School in the Spring of 2008 to improve conditions at the local community center and park.
In addition to providing ideas and feedback on NURVE programs and capital projects to the NURVE Committees and city and county policy makers, the NURVE Youth Advisory Council also helps facilitate community focus groups and encourages other youth to become involved in their community.
Their goals are to:
- be leaders in their community
- inspire the next generation of youth
- succeed
- have a voice in their community
- recruit other youth to participate in community planning and events
- help make their community and school better
The Council is coordinated by the UC Berkeley Center for Cities and Schools and the Richmond Children's Foundation.
